![]() It's hard to diagnose without laying hands on the instrument. and it was the battery in its compartment that was resonating which a small piece of foam tape solved. I had another bass that was buzzing acoustically on C notes. I have a bass here whose neck is so narrow and thin that when I converted it to BEAD the low string makes the neck itself resonate and exhibit all sorts of weird behaviours as a result, for example. There are other things that can go wrong. You can sometimes get defective strings too. Another is that the section of string near the ball end which is reinforced (thicker) can sit past the saddle and become part of the vibrating mass of the string which wrecks intonation. One is that the string can not really bend enough to properly sit over the saddle. If the break over angle across the saddle is too low the bridge saddle can move and buzz and if the saddle is too close to where the string mounts it can cause a number of issues. Fret the string high on the neck and make sure there is a decent gap to the pickup (3-4mm is probably OK) and you can check by feel by gently pushing the string down over the magnets to get a feel how much they are 'grabbing' the string.Īnother thing that can mess with the string is the bridge. The pickup magnetic field can also modulate the string as it passes in and out of the stronger parts of the field doing the wow-wow-wow thing also. ![]() ![]() If the pickup is too close to the string when it is fretted the magnets can yank on the string and pull is sharp. The third thing that might matter is pickup height. This is a significant reason why shorter scales require higher gauge strings to get the tension back up. And they can also mean that the pitch changes with the envelope of plucking going from sharp to flat when plucked then allowed to sustain. What effect did the change have on tension? Low string tension can let the string pitch modulate. Basically, if the string is pulled down sharply at an angle behind the nut it'll have less problems than if the string runs straight through the nut to the tuner. The nut slot situation also depends on the break angle of the string over the nut, which in turn depends somewhat on how the string is wound onto the tuner post. ![]() A big enough change could cause issues with the nut slot width. How much did the gauge of strings change? Notably that low B. Similarly, please send any comments or critiques to the moderators.
